Austausch 2012: St. Mary's - BMV

A Week in Cambridge

It all started on the 27th June. Some pupils from Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 went to England for the experience of a life time. After a lovely welcome from our hosts, we all went “home” to get to know the families or to see them again and had a nice evening with them.

The next day, we had an impressive tour around St. Mary’s and met the Headmistress who welcomed us in a very friendly way. Later, we  went into Cambridge and punted on the river Cam which was lots of fun.

On Tuesday our German group travelled to London where we visited sights like Trafalgar Square, the London Eye, Tower Bridge, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament and had a picnic in front of Buckingham Palace. At the end of this long day, we all went to bed early and some girls even started to dream in English.

In the morning the younger girls joined their English exchange partners on a History trip to Kentwell while the older ones attended lessons and baked scones. After eating lunch in school we spent the afternoon in Cambridge.

The weather was very good all the time and since the temperature was about 28°, we all enjoyed swimming in the sea and playing beach volleyball with our teachers in Wells, Norfolk, the next day.

Friday was the last day at school, so we went to the end of year service. School finished at 12 o’clock. This meant we could spend the afternoon doing what we wanted. The year 9 girls went for a pizza and then had lots of fun bowling. We then spent the weekends with our families and did lots of different things.

Finally we just want to recommend this exchange because we’ve enjoyed our time and improved our English a lot. I’m good friends with my exchange partner and if you come to England, you will see the weather can be very pleasant.

An impressive week

Written by Katharina Kursawa (9b), Nora Schumm (9c)

We -  pupils from year seven, eight, nine and ten - went on the exchange to our partner school, St. Mary’s in Cambridge.
In Year Seven we started our correspondence with our penfriends and had the opportunity to come to England, to stay at the home of our penfriends for one week. This year we went to Cambridge for the second time.

One day we visited London with many of its sights: Trafalgar Square, Tower Bridge, Big Ben and so on. After seeing “the Changing of the Guards” we sat down in front of Buckingham Palace to have lunch.
While our penfriends were at school, we went shopping and punting on the river Cam in Cambridge. Punting was really fun because we were allowed to do it on our own.

Another day, we, the older pupils, had the chance to visit two lessons with our penfriends while the younger ones went to Kentwell Hall to experience Tudor life. They had to wear Tudor costumes.

The weather was very good in England. As it was hot and sunny we went on a trip to the beach in Norfolk. We had a lot of fun because we swam in the sea and had a “sand battle”. Friday was the last day before the summer holidays for the St. Mary’s pupils. So we celebrated their end of year service together with them.

At the weekend, we did something with our families, e.g. went bowling, swimming or rowing.
On Sunday we met at London Stansted in the late afternoon to go back to Germany by plane.

We were very sad that our week in Cambridge passed so quickly. The time in the families was very good and we had a lot of fun. We got on well with our penfriends and we gained lots of new impressions.

We are looking forward to seeing our penfriends in Essen again, soon.
All in all, it was an excellent exchange with St. Mary’s.
